Amidst the wealth we have created so far and the wealth we want for our future, we may be exchanging our enjoyment of life now for the the enjoyment we expect the have in the future.
So, how do we create balance to have it all?
Ask anyone that has amassed a significant amount of wealth and they’ll tell you they wished they hadn’t spent so much time focusing solely on their wealth. Nonetheless, we know that in order to create something big, it requires a big investment of our time, attention and resources. Regardless of our goal, what exists from here to there creates a tension within us. We have a vision...it’s big and when we get there, we will be so much happier and more fulfilled once we have it. Right?
That depends on your approach.
A goal like wealth creation often requires a ferocious focus. When you wake up, what’s the first thing you think about? Money
When you eat out at a restaurant? Money
When your kid outgrew their shoes? Money
When your partner wants to take a vacation? Money
See the trend here? It’s easy to fall into this line of thinking with a goal as big as ‘wealthy in the future.’
What most of us forget, however, is the wealth that exists for us here and now. It may require a bit of a mind-shift to realize it though.
Let’s redesign the above examples.
When you first wake up, what’s the first thing you think about?
Wealth in health. I woke up without issue.
When you eat out at a restaurant?
Wealth in flexibility. The ability to separate from work and responsibilities for a bit to enjoy a meal someone else created for you.
When your kid outgrew their shoes and they need a new pair?
Wealth in relationships. I have a child that relies on me for their needs. And you probably love them till the ends of the Earth, too.
When your partner wants to take a vacation?
Wealth in freedom. Traveling represents the ultimate in human experience - to go somewhere else to try something new.
The desire to achieve with the ability to appreciate what we have takes balance and focus. It is a discipline in Mindset. Rather than focusing on the goal itself, let us train our mind to focus on why we want what we want. How we choose to think will determine how we reach our finish line.
At Money & Mindfulness, we help our clients keep sight of their goals in a balanced way. We know that money can help provide the freedom, flexibility and futures we want, but we must remain mindful of how we reach those goals - never losing sight of what exists right here, right now. So, if you are ready to shift into a beautiful focus for your life, we would love to connect with you.
