What is Mindfulness?

It may seem like ‘mindfulness’ is just another one of those buzzwords embedded within our culture, one that loses its meaning the more we hear or see it. In terms of being mindful of something, we are being asked to pay attention to it. “Mind the gap, mind your manners, mind your Ps and Qs” are all expressions embedded within our language. If someone were to tell you to “mind your money,” you could probably fire off a bunch of ways you already do that every day.

But how are you minding your money? Does your relationship with it resemble something healthy? Is it a source of stress? Of obsession? Does it create feelings of lack? To be mindful of money is one thing. But to experience mindfulness in terms of money is something else entirely.

Mindfulness has the potential to transform the way we relate to a subject and the experiences it creates for us. It may be fair to say that thinking about money elicits a reaction, and for most of us, that reaction is generally one that brings up feelings of fear, scarcity and control. “I fear not having enough money to do the things I want. I don’t have enough money to last me through retirement. I need to manage my money tightly to ensure I have enough for both of those things.” Statements like these create a default mindset. But mindfulness asks us to look at that mindset to see if it’s one we really want or need to create a healthy, fulfilled life.

There are three characteristics of mindfulness. Intention, attention, and attitude. When looking at your financial situation, getting to your intention is probably pretty easy. You intend to create wealth and prosperity for yourself and your family, right? The next two steps may get trickier though. In terms of creating prosperity and abundance for yourself, where is your attention? Is it on the grind of your day to day investments? Watching the market like a hawk to ensure you don’t miss that next once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? If this is you, you’re not alone. Most of us were taught that in order to be successful at something, you need to put in a ton of effort and attention. Your money is no different. Right? Well, that depends. Mostly on your attitude.

Attitudes can be positive or negative, rigid or fluid. Attitudes influence your motivations, emotions and perceptions. If your attitude about money is one that is stuck in the mechanisms of fear and lack, you’re not likely to be having a good time with achieving your financial dreams. In fact, it’s probably true that any time the subject of money comes up, your mindset shifts into something a little darker, or a little more stressed out. Is this really the way you want to live?

Leaning into our mindfulness around the topic money will help change the attitudes we carry about it. From fear to fullness. From lack to longevity. From scarcity to abundance.
